Safe Church Training

By providing a Safe Church training program, we assist congregations and other bodies to promote high standards of ethical behaviour and care for all, especially for children and others in vulnerable circumstances. Our training is part of the LCA’s commitment to reflecting God’s love through the way we treat each other and those who come into contact with our church.

Safe Church Training

WHO IS THE SAFE CHURCH TRAINING FOR?
Level 1 Level 2 Role
✔ ✔ Pastor
✔ ✔ General Church Board member
✔ ✔ Board chair/council chair or their representative
✔ ✔ Safe Church Coordinator, ministry leader, person in key decision-making position (e.g. Sunday school superintendent)
✔ ✔ Member of Lutheran Church of New Zealand Council of Synod
(✔) (✔) Employee/volunteer, where and as specified in their position description
✔   Pastor emeritus in active service
✔   Board member/council member/committee member/district or general synod delegate
✔   Chaplain/elder/pastoral assistant/lay reader/lay worship leader
✔   Person (paid or volunteer) who engages with children or vulnerable persons as part of their ministry/position
(✔)   Congregation members welcome (not required)
HOW OFTEN MUST I DO THIS TRAINING?
  • All Safe Church Training is valid for three years
  • The suggested order for Safe Church Training is to complete Level 1 – Induction & Safeguarding (or provide evidence of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)) within the last three years before commencing Level 2.

Level 1

Available as self-paced online training (iLearn) or a live online webinar (dates as advertised below).

Both sessions are approximately 90 minutes each.

1. Induction

Covers the LCANZ Standards of Ethical Behaviour and our legal rights and responsibilities when we are working or volunteering in ministry.

2. Safeguarding

Covers working with vulnerable adults and children and creating safe environments that support safe ministry. Includes reporting of abuse and neglect.

Level 2

Available as self-paced online training (iLearn) or a live online webinar (dates as advertised below).

Designed for those in governance roles or key leadership in children’s ministries.

Covers more detailed safety responsibilities including risk management and the use of SMO (Safety Management Online).

This session is approximately 90 minutes.

Safe Church Self-paced Online Training – registration

Level 1 Expand

Online training is hosted by Australian Lutheran College’s iLearn platform and is a combination of working through written content, videos, scenarios and activities.

You will need to allow up to 90 minutes in total to complete the two training modules and you will need good internet access.

Please note the training does not need to be finished in one attempt. You will be able to save your work and come back later to complete it.

An automated email will be sent out on completion of your registration, which will include your enrolment key for training access on ALC iLearn

If the email has not arrived within one hour, please check your junk mail.

If you still cannot find the email, please contact Professional Standards on 08 8267 7300 or psd.events@lca.org.au

If you do not already have an account on iLearn, you will need to create your own account.

We really do appreciate your understanding and patience, as there are a few steps involved here.

Safe Church Live Online Webinar

Australian Level 1 live online webinar Expand

Australian Live Online Level 1 training consists of two separate 90-minute sessions over Zoom.

  • Level 1 – Induction
  • Level 1 – Safeguarding

These are suitable for those who have never completed LCANZ Safe Church Training in the past and also for those who have previously completed this training. (Safe Church Training is required to be completed every three years.)

To participate, you will need:

  • a reasonable and reliable internet connection
  • a quiet space where you can focus on the presentation
  • a computer with:
    • audio and a webcam
    • up-to-date operating system and software
      (e.g. at least Windows 10 and the latest browser. It will be an advantage to install the desktop Zoom app).

Please note that tablets and phones may be used but require switching screens during the presentation. Accessing resources during the session will be easier with two screens or by accessing them on multiple devices.

Individuals, couples and groups of people can join Zoom webinars and participate in the training. This mode of delivery allows easier support for those who do not have a computer or are not comfortable with self-paced online training.

Every participant must register, even if they intend to participate as a group. This is so that you can be given credit for your participation. Click here to download the registration form.

Some topics covered in the Safe Church training may raise sensitivities for you.

Before engaging in this training, please ensure you have a trusted person you can talk to about such topics. This might be a friend or a medical professional. The free helplines to the right may also be useful.

Recognition of Prior Learning

Prior learning is currently recognised in relation to Level 1 training requirements.

Level 1: Induction
Lutheran Education Australia’s course for staff in Lutheran schools, Valuing Safe Communities, is recognised as aligning with Safe Church Level 1: Induction.

Level 1: Safeguarding
In relation to this part of the Level 1 training, there is recognition of other similar courses in the area of safeguarding.
