Conversation starters
We want every member of the church to know what is happening so they can consider the options and contribute to the way forward. Synod delegates, in your responsible role, we are looking to you especially to engage your parish members in this conversation. We've prepared some talking points to help get the conversations started.
The Guidelines for Respectful Debate have been approved by General Church Board and College of Bishops for use at General Synod but they have application for discussions in local settings as well. We encourage you to print them out and discuss them with your congregation before you commence conversations on this topic.
Talking points to get you started
The questions below are suggestions for getting the conversations going. Feel free to use all of them, any of them, or create your own. These questions could be considered individually or in small groups, trios or pairs. Provide sticky notes so participants can write their comments and paste them onto boards. This approach creates an environment where people are able to be honest about their feelings. Allow everyone to look at the collective thoughts and feelings of the group, without making any comments.
