Our God is an awesome God
The LORD is king.
He is clothed with majesty and strength.
The earth is set firmly in place and cannot be moved.
Your throne, O LORD, has been firm from the beginning,
and you existed before time began. (verses 1, 2)
Read Psalm 93
There is a song with a line that echoes the thoughts of the writer of this psalm: ‘Our God is an awesome God’.
God is the one who was there before time began. He is the one who began time, who created the vast universe, of which we are still only just beginning to unravel the secrets and mysteries. He is the one who placed us on a small planet in the midst of all that hugeness, and who cares for us. He is the one who challenged Abraham to count the stars, and already knew how many there were.
The one who could create all that, the one whose word was powerful enough to make it all happen – ‘Our God is an awesome God’.
Yet he was the one whose Son could fit into a young girl’s womb. Who watches over the sparrows, who smiles as a small baby’s head gets wet. He is the one who loves us so much he could not bear to punish us as he should have. So his Son took our place, and we are now God’s friends. He promises that nothing can snatch us out of his hand.
‘Our God is an awesome God!’
Father, you really are an awesome God. Your power is beyond description, and your love is beyond my understanding. To you be praise for ever. Amen.
