I am the greatest
An argument broke out among the disciples as to which one of them should be thought of as the greatest. Jesus said to them, ‘The kings of the pagans have power over their people, and the rulers claim the title “Friends of the People:’ But this is not the way it is with you; rather, the greatest one among you must be like the youngest, and the leader must be like the servant.’ (verses 24-26)
Read Luke 22: 24-30
It’s a great feeling to be number one. Whether it ‘s a premiership flag, the best and fairest award, the dux of the class or whatever, we all aspire to receive the acclamation and accolades that come with being number one.
The disciples of Jesus were no different. They had come from ordinary backgrounds; they were probably pretty ordinary people. So when it seemed to them that Jesus was about to be the biggest number one in the whole world, they wanted to be right up there with him.
But that’s not the path Jesus wants his disciples to tread. Instead of us ruling the world, Jesus wants us to serve the world.
And as we do so, we will find that the satisfaction that comes will prove to be more valuable than the satisfaction that comes from any trophies or flags.
Dear Jesus, inspire me to serve as you serve – in love and in humility. Amen.
