Cyber Security

The hackers are out there. Let's work together to build our fortress.

No doubt you have read reports in the media about the rapid increase in cyber crime across the world. Not only is the frequency of attacks is escalating, hackers are also getting smarter and craftier. Every time you log in on your laptop or device, you are a potential target for cyber thieves. Chances are, you are being attacked right now.

Our LCA email system defends up to 15,000 attacks a week. That's 625 every hour! We are constantly monitoring and upgrading our defences but by ourselves we can only do so much. Cyber security is the responsibility of every one of us. If you use the internet, you need to be cyber savvy. Just one crack in our fortress leaves all of us vulnerable. So, let's join forces and work together to build one unbreakable line of defence against the attackers.

We're here to help you.

Brett Hausler (Executive Officer of the Church) and Daniel Wiltshire (Head of IT) speak about the cyber threats facing the LCANZ every day and the things all of us can do to build our fortress.

Multi Factor Authentication (MFA)

Our latest defence unit

We have introduced Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) on all our LCA email accounts. This video explains what MFA is and how it protects all of us from cyber attacks.

MORE ABOUT MFA

Passphrases

A passphrase is usually as easy for you to remember as a password, but it will make a hacker's job a lot harder. An example: 'Blackstump' is relatively easy to crack; much harder is 'My church is at Blackstump!' As well as the large number of characters in passphrases, the use of spaces and punctuation or special characters makes cracking your code virtually impossible.

How to change a password or passphrase

Multi Factor Authentication (MFA)

Multi Factor Authentication (MFA) is widely used across all industry sectors. Current research indicates that if you have MFA activated, your chance of being hacked is only 0.1%. That's compelling evidence. LCA IT is introducing MFA on all LCA email accounts. When MFA is activated, you will need to verify that the person logging in is really you. You must enter a code from your phone in order to complete the login. This means that, even if a hacker has your passphrase, they can't get into your account because they don't have your phone.

  2. Info Sheet: Multi Factor Authentication

Password Protection

It is good practice to use different passwords/passphrases for each account you hold. Don’t use passwords/passphrases that can be easily guessed, such as your street address, birthdays or pet names. Create your password/passphrase from a detail that is known only to you. Never share your personal password/passphrase with anyone else. For additional security, enable Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA).

Cyber Awareness Training

Cyber Awareness teaches you to be alert to the ways thieves try to trick you into giving them your information. They might send a spam email asking you to click on a link or direct you to a fake website. They might call you on your phone or send an SMS, pretending to be an authority. We all need to understand the techniques criminals use so we can recognise them when we see them. LCA IT has introduced Cyber Awareness Training for Churchwide and District staff. This will help to protect all of us.

Endpoint Protection

Endpoint protection is the term used for software that monitors your programs and emails, detects malicious software and stops it in its tracks. It is the last line of defence against viruses and other malicious software. All LCA devices have endpoint protection installed, but every one of us needs to have active endpoint protection on our personal devices, too.

Hardware and Software

Some people are not fully protected against thieves because they are using outdated hardware (desktop computers, laptops etc) or software (platforms or programs). It is important that your hardware and software are regularly updated so they continue to be supported. As an example, Windows 7 is no longer supported by Microsoft; if you are using Windows 7 or an earlier version, you are increasing your risk of a successful cyber attack.
