New code of conduct for church workers

24 February 2026

In December 2025, the General Church Board approved a reviewed version of the church’s Standards of Ethical Behaviour. The reviewed document now incorporates a church code of conduct.

As Christians, we know and proclaim that God loves all human beings. Responding to that love in how we behave towards one another is an important part of that message. As Jesus says in John 13:35, ‘By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.’

The Standards of Ethical Behaviour and Code of Conduct are underpinned by Scripture and apply to all aspects of the life of the church. The document clearly sets out in practical terms how, together as God’s people, we can work towards building respectful and safe communities within our church for everyone.

The document covers general behaviour, diverse needs, interactions and boundaries, physical contact, electronic communications, responding to risk of harm, general Safe Church obligations and safety management.

As part of their Safe Church obligations, church workers (including pastors), employees and volunteers are required to download the Standards of Ethical Behaviour and Code of Conduct, sign it and return a copy via email to the Safe Church Service Desk at safechurch@lca.org.au

If you have any questions about the church’s new code of conduct, contact the Safe Church Service Desk:
Phone: 1800 418 588 (Australia), +61 8 8267 7300 (New Zealand)
Email: safechurch@lca.org.au

Tim Ross is the LCANZ's Professional Standards Manager.
