Think, pair and share the love of Jesus

18 February 2019

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The swineherds ran off, and on going into the town, they told the whole story about what had happened to the demoniacs. Then the whole town came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him, they begged him to leave their neighbourhood. (verses 33-34)

Read Matthew 8:28-34

When sharing new ideas in workshops it’s not unusual to use a ‘think, pair, share’ strategy. This is an opportunity to think deeply about an idea, then partner with another person, before sharing joint insights with a wider group.

In chapter 8 of Matthew’s gospel we hear of events in the life of Jesus where, by healing others, controlling nature and the supernatural, Jesus demonstrates his power and authority. In the chapters before these miraculous events Jesus devotes his time to teaching. In the chapters following this section Jesus sends his followers into the world to share his teachings and to perform miracles in his name. In between these times Jesus allows his actions, in the form of miracles, to speak.

In a way Jesus is demonstrating think, pair and share. His teachings, such as the Sermon on the Mount, provide a great deal to think about. The miracles he performs are discussed among others and ultimately his followers are given the task of sharing to a wider audience.

We are all called to share the love of Jesus, even though at times this will be difficult. Jesus knows that following in his footsteps will not be easy. As can be seen in verses 33 and 34 of today’s reading, the mob had lost sight of what was truly important. They demanded Jesus leave the region because they valued their pigs more than the healing of the two demon possessed men.

We all have our demons, things that control us. Jesus shows us he can help us, restore us and truly transform our lives.

Jesus, we ask you to free us from influences or addictions that are not helpful for us and help us to maintain our focus on what is most important in our lives in you.
