Save the date for the first-ever ALWS Walk My Way Ukraine

21 February 2024

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

QUT Gardens Point Campus in the heart of Brisbane is a long way from Kyiv, where children continue to suffer from ongoing conflict. But on Saturday 11 May 2024, Queenslanders can show the people of Ukraine they have not been forgotten as they ‘Walk My Way’ for children who had to run away from war.

Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS) Walk My Way Ukraine will help Ukrainian children who have reached safety in Poland to receive shelter, trauma counselling and support to go to school.

Meanwhile, inside Ukraine – in cities like Kharkiv, Odessa and Kyiv – we can help build bomb shelters under schools, renovate apartments to protect grandparents left behind as they face bombs and bitter cold and restore water, electricity and sewage connections.

The first ever Walk My Way Ukraine offers two distances – 12.5 kilometres along the Brisbane River, through beautiful Southbank, or 3 kilometres for those who may be less mobile.

Both walks return to the Walk My Way hub at QUT, where walkers, supporters and visitors are welcomed with Ukrainian food and cultural activities.

All ages are welcome – especially families. It’s a special way to show children and grandchildren who may feel worried and helpless by the world’s troubles that we all have the power to help people in need, even if they are far away in a place like Ukraine.

If you can’t make it to the ALWS Walk My Way, you can sponsor a walker or make a donation to help a child from Ukraine who had to run away.

When: Saturday 11 May, 1pm to 5pm

Where: QUT Gardens Point Campus, Brisbane City
