Harvest Thanksgiving 1971
This flashback from The Lutheran reflects on Harvest Thanksgiving, a regular part of annual church calendar for so many.
For generations, Lutheran congregations have gathered to celebrate Harvest Thanksgiving, bringing gifts of produce, flowers and other offerings as a visible expression of gratitude to God. These cherished traditions remind us to give thanks for God’s faithful provision and care in every season.

In an earlier edition that same year, there is also a published article titled, ‘Harvest Time’ by R. F. Plaess. He uses the agricultural harvest as a picture of both thankfulness to God and the Christian mission of bringing people to faith in Christ.
Common Hymns to hear at a Harvest Thanksgiving service would be Now Thank We All Our God; We Plough the Fields and Scatter; Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of Creation; and For the Beauty of the Earth.
While we give thanks for the fruits of the earth, we also remember the greater harvest God desires: people hearing the good news of Jesus and growing in faith. As we celebrate God’s goodness, we are encouraged to share His love with others.
