God is leading us through this crisis

12 May 2020

Just two months ago our lives were filled with activity. Now, we are in isolation and activities that gave us a sense of self-worth have been stripped away, due to COVID-19.

GP and counsellor Dr Kirsten Due reflects on how we can ensure that our neighbours, family and fellow parishioners thrive, rather than just survive, during these unprecedented times.

‘The identities we created in our frantic lives have been taken away and now it is time to reflect on what God is doing in our lives – how he is redefining us’, Kirsten says. ‘Just as the Israelites were led by Moses out of Egypt, our current circumstances provide an opportunity to stop, reflect and see what God is doing.

‘It is at times of crisis that we know without a doubt that God is at work – yet his work is not always comfortable.’

Kirsten’s advice is to take time to listen to God through his word. ‘Spending 30 minutes a day quietly reflecting on a Bible passage and calming our minds would be a good start’, she says. ‘It’s a walk with God at a time when people are feeling stuck and isolated. But we are not alone. In every street, in every neighbourhood, in every city, people are experiencing the same thing. Isolation is an unseen sacrifice we make for the entire community.

‘God’s ways are not our ways. He is Lord of life and death and we can be assured that he is powerfully at work. God’s fingerprints are all over this situation.’
