Flashback Friday: Bringing Christ to the Nations through The Lutheran Hour

For generations of Australians, Sunday radio broadcasts were a familiar and trusted way of hearing God’s Word. Long before podcasts, livestreams and social media, The Lutheran Hour carried the message of Jesus Christ into homes and communities across the nation.

The Australian Lutheran Church embraced this ministry in the closing months of World War II. The first Australian broadcast of The Lutheran Hour aired on 2 September 1945, introducing listeners to a ministry that would become a significant outreach tool for decades to come.

Inspired by the internationally recognised Lutheran Hour program from the United States, the broadcasts focused on sharing the good news of Jesus Christ, His life, death and resurrection, and the hope found in the Gospel. Through radio, the church was able to reach people far beyond its congregations, including many who may never have entered a church building.

Over the years, the ministry expanded significantly. What began with a single broadcast grew into a network heard across Australia, supported by dedicated pastors, broadcasters, volunteers, committees, sponsors and listeners. Advances in technology and changing media landscapes led to new program formats and broader opportunities for outreach while remaining faithful to the same Gospel message.

In 1995, Australian Lutherans celebrated 50 years of Lutheran radio broadcasting. The milestone recognised not only the history of the ministry, but also the countless individuals whose commitment helped sustain and grow the work. The anniversary served as a reminder that although methods of communication change, the mission remains the same: bringing Christ to the nations.

Today, that mission continues through digital media, online content, podcasts, videos and social platforms, reaching new audiences in ways that were scarcely imaginable in 1945. Yet the purpose remains unchanged: sharing the hope, peace and salvation found in Jesus Christ with people wherever they are.

As we look back on the legacy of The Lutheran Hour, we give thanks for those who faithfully used the technology of their day to proclaim the Gospel and inspire future generations to do the same.

Flashback Friday

This article is inspired by a feature published in The Lutheran magazine on 4 September 1995, commemorating 50 years of The Lutheran Hour in Australia.

Now in 2026, Our Messages of hope are played across more than 1200 frequencies on almost 50 radio stations.

For over 80 years we have been using the media of the day to bring the love of God to people in need of hope. Today we produce videos, podcasts and printed materials – but radio is still our most effective way of reaching people. Our Messages of hope are played across more than 1200 frequencies on almost 50 radio stations.
