Secret Men’s Business: Building Faith, Friendship and Positive Role Models

Looking back through the pages of The Lutheran from March 2003, we find the story of Shed Men, a unique ministry in Geraldton, Western Australia, led by Pastor David Kuss. Meeting in a backyard shed, men and boys gathered regularly for practical activities, honest conversations and Christian fellowship.

The article describes how the group provided an environment where men of all ages could connect, learn from one another and discuss life, faith, family and relationships. Through projects ranging from motorbike repairs and recycling to shared meals and devotional discussions, Shed Men sought to model Christian manhood and strengthen bonds between fathers, sons and mentors.

A key focus of the ministry was positive role modelling. Pastor Kuss believed many boys were growing up without strong male influences, and that the shed provided an opportunity for men to demonstrate integrity, responsibility and faith in everyday life. Importantly, the group welcomed both churchgoers and those with little connection to the church, making it an effective outreach ministry.

The follow-up article, We Talk About Stuff, highlighted the impact of the ministry on participants. Men spoke about the value of having a place where they could discuss challenges openly, build friendships and learn from one another. Families also reported benefits, as the conversations and relationships formed in the shed helped strengthen life at home.

More than two decades later, in 2026, the story offers an insight into the creative ways Lutheran congregations have connected with their communities. What began in a simple shed became a ministry of encouragement, discipleship and outreach, reminding us that meaningful ministry often happens wherever people gather to share life together in Christ.
