Hope and renewal shared at mission and ministry conference

Pastors, lay workers and congregational leaders from the LCA’s NSW and ACT District last month gathered for three days of worship, learning and encouragement in ministry at the District’s Mission and Ministry Conference.

Held at Warrambui Retreat and Conference Centre in Murrumbateman NSW, the conference provided opportunities to deepen participants’ understanding of God and strengthen mission across the district.

Pastor and spiritual director Anthony Price guided attendees into a deeper awareness of who God is and how our understanding of God shapes our lives and ministries. NSW and ACT District Bishop Richard Schwedes said many participants left feeling ‘renewed, encouraged and ready to continue serving in hope and with a focus on God’.

During the conference, Pastor Ian Rentsch and church worker Michael Dobie shared practical ways in which congregations can be supported in mission. Pastor Ian highlighted the district’s developing Regional Ministry Partnership in country NSW as an encouraging example of collaboration to help serve local communities.

Bishop Richard’s report to the conference offered insights into what is happening across the district and the wider LCA. Among the highlights were stories of congregations that previously had considered closing but were now experiencing growth and renewal.

‘This is an excellent reminder for us to stay hopeful, stay prayerful, remain attentive to what God is doing in us and through us, and to be responsive to God’s leading,’ Bishop Richard said.

Inspired by Ephesians 1:18,19, the conference theme ‘Seeing with New Eyes’ was reflected throughout worship, devotions and presentations, encouraging participants to reflect on God’s work among them from a fresh perspective. The conference concluded with a devotion from Bishop Richard and Pastor Mathew von Stanke based on Ezekiel 37:1–14, which focused on God’s power to bring life even when situations appear hopeless.

Beyond the formal program, Bishop Richard said participants valued opportunities to build relationships through shared meals, evening gatherings and informal conversations. Reflecting on the gathering, he described the three days at Warrambui as ‘a gift’.

‘God opened our eyes, minds, and hearts to who he is and what it means to participate in his mission,’ he said.

The next conference, to be held from 5–7 August, will explore the theme ‘The Great Co-mission’, based on Matthew 28:19,20. Congregational leaders from the NSW and ACT District and across the LCANZ who are interested in mission are invited to join pastors and lay workers for the gathering.
