They do things differently in Queensland.

Must be all that sunshine.

The first-ever Queensland ALWS Walk My Way on Sunday 4 August started early! Big Burst Brekkie at 6.30, opening worship at 7.30, and by 8.20 more than 270 blue-shirted walkers hit the bitumen … and boardwalk … and beach!

Leading by example, Bishop Paul Smith and 1st Assistant Bishop Mark Vainikka and 2nd Assistant Bishop Ben Hentschke. Mark and Ben made a race out the 26-kilometre course. Mark won.

A special joy was seeing the Fantastic Fives – Grade 5 from St James Lutheran School, Hervey Bay – step out in their special hats. Their school raised enough money to support more than 250 refugee children in Kakuma Refugee Camp go to school! Truly fantastic!

Our most senior walker was Hannelore Kienzle, at 78 years.

Littlies ‘walked’ in their prams or by piggyback.

What a joy to see old and young, Lutheran family and community friends, walking side-by-side bringing love to life for children who have lost everything. It shows what can happen when Lutheran congregations and Lutheran schools can come together, working through ALWS and supported by the LLL.

This generosity, along with the kindness of volunteers helping with cooking and marshalling and welcoming, meant the walkers’ efforts can support 2196 children to go to school.

The Queensland Walk My Way follows earlier events in Adelaide, Darwin and Perth, with 733 walkers and their sponsors supporting 8451 children to go to school.

You can still be part of Walk My Way – by sponsoring someone or giving a donation walkmyway.org.au

Stay tuned for a Walk My Way coming your way in 2020 – Gold Coast, Melbourne, Toowoomba, Albury
