Making his mark

25 September 2026

Richard Fox is proving that a calling can take more than one form. The former AFL umpire is now preparing for pastoral ministry, drawing on lessons learned from years of making tough decisions on the football field.

As a child, Richard Fox had two ambitions: to be involved in Australian Rules football at the highest level and to become a pastor. While his path did not unfold exactly as expected, he has found a way to pursue both passions.

Rather than playing elite football, Richard reached the top level of the game as an AFL umpire. At the same time, he has undertaken theological studies at Luther Seminary, responding to a long-held sense of God’s call to ministry.

Richard believes his experience in umpiring has provided valuable preparation for pastoral leadership. Working his way through the umpiring ranks from the age of 19, he learned to think quickly, make difficult decisions under pressure and stand by those decisions with confidence.

‘Umpiring helped me grow up through my teenage years,’ Richard said. ‘I learned to make decisions in an instant and have the courage and confidence to back my judgement.’

The role also taught him resilience. Faced with criticism from players and supporters, Richard learned not to take negative reactions personally, recognising that making unpopular decisions is sometimes part of the job.

Those experiences, he says, have shaped qualities that will serve him well in ministry.

‘Umpiring has given me the capacity to handle and manage people,’ he said. ‘You learn to communicate clearly, calm people down and help keep everyone focused on a common goal.’

Now focused on his theological studies, Richard sees both his sporting and spiritual journeys as part of God’s direction for his life.

‘I know I am where God wants me to be,’ he said. ‘For now, that means putting the books away for a while and giving glory to God.’

As he prepares for pastoral ministry, Richard reflects on how an unexpected path through elite sport has equipped him with leadership, communication and decision-making skills that will continue to shape his service to the church.

What began as two childhood dreams has become one unique vocation, combining a passion for football with a commitment to sharing the Gospel.
