A timeless resource for faith-filled family devotions

On this Flashback Friday we look back on the devotion books that help shape our lives – like ‘Little Visits with God’ and ‘More little visits with God’.
I wonder do you still have and use this book or others from the Arch Books through Lutheran Publishing House?

For generations, Christian parents have sought meaningful ways to share their faith with their children. One devotional resource that has touched countless homes is More Little Visits with God, a companion volume to the much-loved Little Visits with God.

Written by Martin P. Simon and Allan Hart Jahsmann, the book was created specifically for families with young children. Through simple storytelling, Bible readings, discussion questions and prayers, it encourages families to spend time together in God’s Word and grow in faith.

The book received enthusiastic endorsements from respected Christian educators and parents. In the foreword, Walter Riess described the profound impact that the original Little Visits with God had on his own family, writing that “no single volume has meant as much to our family life as this one”. He noted that the devotional’s influence extended far beyond his own home, finding a place in churches, Sunday schools and Christian households across the country.

Riess credited the authors with helping children encounter the Gospel of Jesus Christ in a personal and meaningful way. He expressed confidence that the second volume would continue this important work, helping children “grow happier and stronger in the sunshine of God’s love”.

A second endorsement came from Oscar E. Feucht, who praised the complementary talents of the two authors. Simon, editor of Christian Parent magazine, was recognised for his ability to draw lessons from everyday life, while Jahsmann was well known for his expertise in developing resources for young children. Feucht encouraged families to use the devotions regularly, believing that early faith formation in the home would bear fruit for years to come.

The authors themselves explained that the book’s language was intentionally written with children in mind. Stories were drawn from everyday experiences, Bible passages were simplified where appropriate, and discussion questions were designed to foster informal family conversations about faith. The aim was to make devotional time engaging, understandable and meaningful for young readers.

Each day’s devotion includes a life-related Bible story, a Scripture reading for older children and parents, questions for discussion and a short prayer. Families are encouraged to use the resource at breakfast, supper or bedtime, creating regular opportunities to “visit with God” together.

More than a devotional book, More Little Visits with God reflects a vision of Christian faith being nurtured in the home. Its enduring message remains relevant today: when families gather around God’s Word, children are given a strong foundation for a lifetime of faith, hope and trust in Jesus Christ.
