Music - Sunday, 21 August 2022 – Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost, Year C (Proper 16)

Introduction

There are many music choices available each week. You will find music suggestions for each reading drawn from the Lutheran Hymnal, the All Together song books and Together in Song. In addition, we have selected the Top 4 Public Domain hymns, the Top 4 All Together and LHS songs under copyright and the Top 4 Contemporary Music suggestions each week. You may like to mix and match from these lists to suit your context.

SONG ‘HERE WE HAVE COME’
Below is a song by John Kleinig, based on Hebrews 12:22-24, to be sung to a tune by Sue Collyer (see Music Package 9, pp 150,151). An alternative tune by Claire Kleinig has just been written. You can find a copy here.

Here we have come to a place that is holy,
the mountain of God,
the city of light.
Here we cross over from earth into heaven,
receiving by faith
things hidden from sight.

Here we can join with ten thousands of angels
who lead us in praise
for what Christ has done.
Here we are part of a world-wide assembly,
in which we are all
joint-heirs with God’s Son.

Here is our Father, the judge of all people
who pardons our sin
and shows us his face.
Here we are close to the saints gone before us
who rest in the light
of God’s holy place.

Here we have Jesus, our one mediator
who brings God to us
and us back to him.
Here is the blood that makes us sinners holy,
by giving us life
and washing us clean.

Music Suggestions for the Festival of St Bartholomew, Apostle

Father of mercies in Thy word – LHS 263  Backing Track
I heard the voice of Jesus say – LHS 306  Backing Track
Glory to Thee, my God this night – LHS 538, verses 1, 2, 6  Backing Track
By All Your Saints

The hymn ‘By all your saints in warfare’ by Horatio Bolton Nelson may be used; the second verse focusing on St Bartholomew has here been modernised by David Schütz. It may be sung to the tune Nyland (LH 16) Backing Track , or to the original tune King’s Lynn (LBW 177, 178; LW 193, 194; TIS 249). The first line of verse 1 could be changed to: ‘By saints on earth who struggle’.

By all your saints in warfare,
for all your saints at rest,
your holy name, O Jesus,
forevermore be blest!
For you have won the battle
that they might wear the crown;
and now they shine in glory
reflected from your throne.

All praise for your apostle,
the faithful, pure and true,
whom underneath the fig-tree
your eye already knew.
Like him, may we be guileless,
true Israelites indeed,
and on your constant presence
may soul and body feed.

Then let us praise the Father,
and worship God the Son,
and sing to God the Spirit,
eternal Three-in-one,
till all the ransomed number
fall down before the throne,
ascribing power and glory,
and praise to God alone.

Top 4 Contemporary Music Suggestions

The following songs have been carefully reviewed, and are recommended for use in congregational worship, primarily because they point people to Christ and proclaim the message of his word in music and song for this Sunday in the lectionary cycle. They also fit well with other selection guidelines as highlighted in Tips for song selection and Fact Sheet 6: Music in Worship. While the use of a particular song by a band or organisation is not necessarily an endorsement of that group or the entire body of their work, we recognise that any scriptural song is a Spiritual song that can be used to complement a rich diet of worship for God’s people.

Please note, the hyperlinked Youtube clips are provided to give you a sense of how music can be performed or for personal use. You must always obtain permission from the creators of the music videos and the creators of the song before using clips in worship, unless permission is explicitly stated beneath the video.

Psalms

PSALM 71

The following metrical paraphrase of Psalm 71:1-6 by David Schütz may be sung to the tune of ATN 84, I want Jesus to walk with me. If reproducing this version, please put ‘Words (c) David Schütz’ at the beginning or the end of the psalm.

I take refuge in you, O Lord.
Let me never be put to shame.
In your justice, come and save me,
bend to hear me, and rescue me.

Be a rock, Lord, where I can hide;
be a fortress to shelter me.
Only you can be my fortress,
and the rock where you set me free.

Rescue me, Lord, out of the hands
of the wicked and the unjust.
Since my youth, Lord, you have been my
only hope and my only trust.

Lord, I’ve always relied on you;
since my birth from my mother’s womb,
you have helped me in my trouble.
So I always give praise to you.
