Liturgy and Prayers - Sunday, 18 June 2023 – Third Sunday after Pentecost, Year A (Proper 6).

Liturgy in one document: Liturgy in One Document, Pentecost 3A (Proper 6)

Opening sentence

You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood,
a holy nation, God’s own people,
in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him
who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light.
(1 Pet 2:9 NRSV)

OR
At just the right time, when we were still powerless,
Christ died for the ungodly.
God demonstrates his own love for us in this:
While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.  (Rom 5:6,8 NIV)

OR
The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few;
therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.  (Matt 9:37,38 NRSV)

Prayer of the day - (Collect):

Traditional

O God, the protector of all who trust in you,
without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy:
Multiply your mercy upon us that,
with you as our ruler and guide,
we may so pass through good things temporal
that we finally lose not those that are eternal;
through your Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.
Amen.

Modernised Traditional

Lord God, you protect all who trust in you,
and without you
nothing is strong and nothing is holy:
In your great mercy
guide us through the good things of this life,
so that in the end
we do not lose the things of eternal life.
We ask this through your Son,
Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.
Amen.

Alternative

(Let us pray for the compassion of Christ. [silence])
Merciful Father,
you have freed us from guilt
through your Son
and called us to work with him
in your kingdom.
Help us to be as compassionate with others
as he has been with us.
For he lives and reigns
with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.
Amen.

New

(Let us pray for dedication in following Jesus. [silence])
Jesus, our Saviour,
thank you for giving up everything for us,
and making us your people.
Live within us,
and teach us to follow you
without counting the cost.
For you live and reign
with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.
Amen.

Alleluia Verse

Alleluia, alleluia.
(Jesus said:) ‘Go and proclaim the good news:
The kingdom of heaven has come near.’
Alleluia.

Prayer after the Gospel

This is the gospel of the Lord.
Praise to you, O Christ.
Thank you, Lord Jesus, for your compassion.
Lead us to work for you
and proclaim your kingdom.
Amen.

Offering Prayer

Thank you, Lord, for calling us
and giving us so many gifts,
both physical and spiritual.
Help us to go out and serve you
by showing your compassion and love to others.
Amen.

Services with Holy Communion:

Preface

It is indeed right and good,
Lord God, holy Father,
that we should at all times and in all places
give thanks to you,
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
(On this day)*
he overcame death by his resurrection
and opened up for us
the way to eternal life with you.
And so, with angels and archangels,
and with all the company of heaven,
we adore and praise your glorious name:

* The words ‘on this day’ are used only on Sundays.

Communion Invitation

Jesus says: ‘I am the bread of life.
Whoever comes to me will never be hungry,
and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.’
(Thanks be to God.)
Come, everything is ready.

OR

Jesus says: ‘My flesh is true food and my blood is true drink.
Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood remain in me, and I in them.’
(Thanks be to God.)
Come, everything is ready.

OR

This cup of thanksgiving for which we give thanks
is a communion in the blood of Christ.
This bread that we break
is a communion in the body of Christ.
(Thanks be to God.)
Come, everything is ready.

Prayer after Communion

See the service order for a standard post-communion prayer. Alternatively, use the fourth prayer of the day (as listed above) at this point. It may be modified as follows:

Jesus, our Saviour,
in this sacrament,
you have given yourself for us,
and have strengthened us
as your people.
Live within us,
and teach us to follow you
without counting the cost.
For you live and reign
with the Father and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and forever.
Amen.

Dismissal

BLESSING
The following verse may be used before the final blessing and dismissal:

Do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say;
for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. (Matt 10:19,20 NRSV)

DISMISSAL
Go in peace to work in the Lord’s kingdom.
Thanks be to God.

OR  In the name of Christ. Amen.
