Who is the Son of Man?

‘Who do people say the Son of Man is?’ They replied, ‘Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets’ (Matthew 16:13b,14).

Read Matthew 16:13–20

The location of today’s reading, Caesarea Philippi, a city named in part in honour of Caesar Augustus, who was deified by his subjects, may highlight how humans like to be glorified in contrast to Jesus’ humility.

Unlike Caesar, Jesus did not proclaim his own divinity. Instead, he asked, ‘Who do people say I am?’ This is the first of two questions Jesus asks of his disciples. In effect, he is using them as his social media advisors to discover what is being said about him in this city founded on a Greek site dedicated to Pan and named after the Roman emperor. In their travels with Jesus, the disciples have heard speculation about him: references to John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah or other prophets. They recognise something unique about Jesus.

Here, in this culturally mixed city, with an equally diverse range of religious beliefs, Jesus asks his second question: ‘Who do you say I am?’ Peter’s response is immediate. He sees the Messiah, Jesus, in what Jesus has said and done. He has heard the speculation but boldly declares, ‘You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.’

With more than two thousand years of Christian understanding, we may feel that Peter is stating the obvious. However, Peter is at the very beginning of this tradition. He is a Jewish man living under Roman oppression, but despite this, he knows what he has seen and heard. He is yet to discover what it means to be the Messiah. Peter has not yet experienced the death and resurrection of Jesus, but has closely observed Jesus, his teachings and his miracles, and knows Jesus well. Peter knows Jesus because he has seen his power at work in the world.

As modern-day followers of Jesus, we understand his work because we know who he is. In a precarious and unpredictable world where warfare, disruption and division emerge almost daily, we may wonder where Jesus is at work. He is there with the peacemakers, with those who support others most in need of comfort, following in his footsteps. Knowing who Jesus is, we can joyfully join Peter and proclaim Jesus as the Son of the living God.

Dear Jesus, help us to follow in your footsteps and recognise you in our lives. Guide us as we support those most in need of your comfort and care, and help us always to know you through your work in our world. Amen.
