The Creator cares about me?

The theme of this week’s devotions is that God is the God of all peoples, not just Israel.
There is an encounter Jesus had with a Canaanite woman (an outsider), and the prophecy in Isaiah of the creation of new heavens and a new earth where people of all nations worship God. Then there was the struggle the Jews had in accepting that Christ died for all, and the passage from 1 Timothy saying that it is through Christ that God connects to all people. Then we had a vision of what reconciliation between God and humankind will be like.
In keeping with this theme, Psalm 138 also references that God is the God of all. ‘May all the kings of the earth praise you, Lord, when they hear what you have decreed.’
But the verse that really caught my attention is something I have pondered many times. ‘Though the Lord is exalted, he looks kindly on the lowly.’
In Psalm 8, the contrast is made greater. ‘When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him?’ (Psalm 8:3,4).
The Creator of the universe cares about me? While it might seem arrogant to believe that God pays attention to me, I approach this with humility.
And the psalmist expresses faith in God’s care. ‘Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life. You stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes; with your right hand you save me’ (Psalm 138:7).
We are not promised a stress- or trouble-free life. But we are promised that God is with us.
So how can we believe this? It is because God has kept his promises by sending his Son to die for us so that we might live, for and with God.
God is the God of all peoples, and that includes me. Only with humility can I thank and praise God.
And humility opens the heart to grace.
Heavenly Father, we thank you for caring for us and looking kindly on us through all the ups and downs of life. We thank you for reconciling us through your Son, who sacrificed his life so that we might live. We pray that we can approach you with both confidence and humility. We pray in Jesus’ name. Amen.
