Walk your way for a child who had to run away

30 April 2024

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Eleven days until Walk My Way Ukraine!

Join Australian Lutheran World Service (ALWS) in Brisbane City on Saturday 11 May for a 3-kilometre or 12.5-kilometre walk along the iconic Brisbane River as we step out to support the people of Ukraine.

Through Walk My Way, our Lutheran family is raising funds to provide much-needed support to the people of Ukraine who are displaced. Your support will build bomb shelters under schools so children can return to schooling, renovate 1500 apartments in Kharkiv so displaced families can return home, and provide psychological support to displaced children and emergency food and water for families in need.

Step out – your way – and help a Ukrainian child walk a new way – to safety, school and someday back home.

Your generosity in action

Through ALWS, you’re helping Ukrainian families impacted by ongoing war receive help when it’s needed most. One of our key projects in Ukraine is building bomb shelters under schools so children can continue their education safely.

Luidmyla is a school director in Ukraine. Buildings around her school have been destroyed, and her school has remained empty for the past year. Over 500 students have had to learn online. Studying online has many challenges, including unstable connections and parents who are working and unable to help.

Facing unprecedented challenges, Luidmyla has continued to persevere and lead her school and students.

Your support is helping build a bomb shelter underneath the school, ensuring students can attend school again.

‘The school will play a role in helping students to cope with this changing situation. This is easier when we are able to meet face to face … when we have our shelter in place and can start having classes onsite again, it will feel safer for everyone.’

We’re inspired by leaders like Luidmyla, who show courage and determination for their communities.

Thank you for helping students in Ukraine return to school!

Prayer points

  • Please pray for the Walk My Way Ukraine event and all those walking, volunteering, fundraising and supporting. Please pray that our efforts reach Ukrainian families and that they receive support and hope.
  • For families living in Rohingya refugee camps in Bangladesh where ALWS is working. Please pray for their protection and their futures.
