Resources to mark Refugee Week 2025

10 June 2025

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

On behalf of the LCANZ’s Commission on Social and Bioethical Questions (CSBQ), District Bishop Richard Schwedes has collated resources to mark this month’s Refugee Week in Australia and New Zealand.

Pastor Richard, who serves as Bishop for the NSW and ACT District with oversight of the Lutheran Church of New Zealand, says with the celebration of Australian Lutheran World Service’s 75th Anniversary this year he ‘was reminded how refugees have played a significant role in our church and God’s ministry through us’.

World Refugee Day is commemorated on 20 June, with Australia having a week’s focus on refugees from 15 to 21 June, while the week is marked from 16 to 22 June.

Bishop Richard says, ‘This is a great opportunity for your community to remember what God says to us about refugees, being a refugee, to pray for refugees and to invite refugees to connect with God through your community. You may wish to consider a worship service, Bible study or prayer that focuses on what God says to us about refugees. As you walk with Jesus, may God’s love be revealed!’

Some potential Bible passages include Leviticus 19:33,34, Psalm 146:5–10, Hebrews 13:1–3 and Matthew 25:31–46.

Some potential hymns and songs are:

  • LHS 347 Guide me O thou great Jehovah
  • LHS 732 Comfort, Comfort all my people
  • LHS 788 Lord who left the highest heaven
  • LHS 799 In Christ there is no east or west
  • LHS 855 Brother, Sister let me serve
  • LHS 853 A new commandment
  • LHS 875 There is a wideness in God’s mercy
  • AT 313 Christ be our light
