Instead, as he who called you is holy, be holy yourselves in all your conduct, for it is written, ‘You shall be holy, for I am holy’ (1 Peter 1:15,16).
Read 1 Peter 1:13–21
‘Redeemed’ is one of those words we use often in Christian circles. We hear it in Scripture, recite it in the Small Catechism, and sing it in countless hymns. It can easily roll off the tongue – yet it is a weighty, sobering word when we pause to consider it.
To be redeemed is to be valued. When you redeem a voucher, you acknowledge that something has worth. In our world, this worth is measured in money. But Scripture reminds us that our value is not counted in dollars and cents. We were bought with the blood of Christ. Redeemed by the Lamb, we are beyond price.
Yet redemption also means we are no longer our own. A price was paid to rescue us from sin and death, and now we belong to God and to his kingdom. That truth can grate against our instincts. Our sinful nature craves autonomy, and our culture prizes individual freedom above almost everything else.
But Peter describes that old way of thinking as ‘empty’. We once imagined ourselves free, not realising we were enslaved – to ourselves and to sin. Living under Christ’s kingship sets us apart. At times, it may even make us feel like outsiders, much like the exiles to whom Peter wrote.
What feels most challenging to you about living as someone redeemed? And where do you see the quiet blessings of belonging wholly to Christ?
Heavenly Father, thank you for redeeming us through the blood of your Son and claiming us as your own. When we feel out of place in this world, remind us that our true home is with you. Amen.
