Church plant celebrates Lunar New Year
More than 120 people gathered in Duncraig, Perth, Western Australia, last month as Grace Chinese Lutheran Church celebrated Lunar New Year with worship and a shared meal – a joyful milestone for this Local Mission Fund-supported ministry.
The congregation was planted by Grace Lutheran Church, Northbridge, and is supported by the LCANZ Local Mission Fund, which enables congregations to establish new and culturally specific mission initiatives.
Lay Minister Jane Chen said many of those who attended the celebration on Sunday 22 February were long-term contacts of the ministry team.
‘One young man whom I had been following up by phone for about two years came to our worship service for the first time. He comes from a Buddhist background,’ she said. ‘Another woman travelled more than three hours by bus from her working farm to attend and had to leave immediately after worship, missing the dinner. One family came from far southern Perth, even though they don’t regularly attend. Several coworkers from our Northbridge congregation also came to support us.’
Two people were baptised during the service after regularly attending worship at Duncraig.
‘I was deeply moved by God’s marvellous work. This is truly his holy ministry – he raises it up and builds it himself. We give all our thanks and glory to the Lord,’ Jane said.
Jane, who is studying theology while serving part-time as a lay minister, spends much of her time following up contacts with prayer and pastoral care, as well as leading Alpha and other courses for those exploring the Christian faith. The church planting team is also active in community outreach, including organising regular barbecue events.
Local Mission Coordinator Jodi Brook, who mentors recipients of the Local Mission Fund, visited Perth for the celebration and met with the church planting team.
‘Please pray for the mission of Grace Chinese Lutheran Church in Perth and for the small leadership team for their commitment to God’s mission in Duncraig. Pray for more coworkers to join them and for the newcomers and contacts already made,’ said Jodi.
