The General Church Board has authorised the launch of a flood appeal to help alleviate the suffering of people and communities in south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales.

While deadly floodwaters in eastern Australia have receded and the clean-up continues in the wake of the tragedy, praying for affected communities is more important than ever, say Lutheran church leaders in some of the worst-hit areas.

LCANZ Bishop Paul Smith and his Queensland District counterpart Pastor Mark Vainikka are calling on members of the church to pray for those impacted by the tragic unfolding flood crisis in southern Queensland and northern New South Wales.

It’s hard to watch a grown man cry, in the middle of a busy shopping centre, near Christmas time, especially a man in a big hat, boots and a farmer’s checked shirt. This is a reality for a small band of people bringing God’s love to life in the tiny town of Gilgandra in the Central West of NSW.

In a moving show of generosity and Christian partnership, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Myanmar/Lutheran Bethlehem Church has donated three Sundays’ worth of offerings towards bushfire relief through the LCA/NZ.
