Para cycling star Kieran Modra has added another gold medal to his trophy cabinet, taking out the tandem 4km pursuit for Australia at the recent 2016 Para-cycling Track World Championships in Montichiari, Italy.

Kieran and his new pilot David Edwards, of Queensland, took the title by beating fastest qualifier Spain in a time of 4mins 12.324secs – little more than a second outside the world record.

Kieran, who has the vision impairment Optic Atrophy, is a member along with his wife Kerry and three daughters, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Hallett Cove, in suburban Adelaide. He is a five-time Paralympic gold medallist and has won three cycling bronze medals, as well as two silver medals at the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

Kieran first won Paralympic gold in Atlanta in 1996, with Kerry (then Golding) as pilot. He won two events at the Games in Athens (2004), where he became the first cyclist to compete in all five Paralympic events, and took single golds in both Beijing (2008), and London (2012), the latter after having broken his neck during lead-up training.

Kieran is a veteran of seven Paralympic Games and has also represented Australia in athletics and swimming, before taking up cycling. He won two bronze medals at the Barcelona Paralympics in 1992 in swimming.
