The Governance Framework outlines our structure and how all the pieces of the Lutheran Church of Australia fit together and support each other. You can read it here.
God grows us as his people to a mature faith in Christ – a faith that comes to life through effective witness and ministry – so that people everywhere may know Christ and his love. Our Strategic Direction, adopted by General Synod in 2018, articulates how we participate with God in this mission.
In 2015 the General Convention of Synod approved new rules for the Lutheran Church of Australia (LCA) Standing Committee on Nominations (SCoN). A key change was an expansion of the remit of the existing SCoN to make its work ongoing and not limited to functions related to the Convention of Synod. The rationale for the change was to better support the identification and recruitment of suitable people for the LCA’s governing bodies.
The committee consists of seven members appointed by General Church Council (GCC) and is responsible to GCC for its work.
The committee works closely with the LCA’s governing bodies to identify their membership requirements, develops and implements processes that enable members of the church to offer themselves for services on governing bodies and prepares recommendations to the appropriate body for the appointment of members.
The full rules of the SCoN are available here.
During the synodical period, SCoN will assist governing bodies to fill casual vacancies that occur from time to time which usually are the result of a resignation of a member.
The appointments to most governing bodies are for a synodical term of three years. The work of the SCoN; therefore, increases significantly in the period leading up to the General Convention of Synod as all positions on most governing bodies are declared open.
The next General Convention of Synod will be held between 2–7 October 2018.
SCoN has now commenced a process to seek nominations for all positions in order to provide a list of recommended nominations for election by General Synod and/or appointment by another appointing body.
This webpage provides details of all governing bodies, including an overview of their respective roles and information about the skills, qualifications and competencies for each governing body.
You will note that some of the governing bodies include two terms of references/rules. This is because the LCA is currently trialling new governing arrangements and national functions. As SCoN can’t anticipate the decisions of General Synod, it is providing both the ‘old’ and ‘trial’ terms of reference.
One of the key issues that will be decided at General Convention of Synod is whether the existing modes of appointment/election are maintained, or changed to align with what has been used during the trial period (appointments being made by GCC or the appropriate governing body).
We invite you to carefully and prayerfully consider whether you are a ‘good fit’ to serve on one of these bodies and make a contribution to the life and ministry of the LCA.
Before you proceed to make a formal nomination we encourage you to read the Frequently Asked Questions page so you are familiar with some of the key issues, processes and requirements related to serving on an LCA governing body.
If you wish to proceed, you will need to complete the nominations form and submit it to the Nominations Committee no later than 15 May 2018.
