John’s clothes were made of camel’s hair, and he had a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey (Matthew 3:4).
Read Matthew 3:1–12
If anyone analysed my social media consumption, they would be more than a little confused. Along with a song that my daughter sent me and funny reels of dogs and sports, you would find videos of people living off-grid in minimalist homes. My wife Connie and I dream of experiencing the freedom and sense of purpose that people living uncluttered lives seem to enjoy.
John the Baptist was the original off-grid guy. His appearance, living arrangements and diet were not for show; they were integral to his mission. He was the voice, unbridled by comfort and need for approval, that saw God clearly. And because he saw clearly, his life was a living, breathing signpost that announced Jesus. The clarity that he experienced is the clarity that he preached.
Our lives are often cluttered with noise, possessions and the pursuit of comfort. We have commitments that swallow up all our time and attention. We can become so entrenched with the things that eat our time and energy that we can’t see Jesus.
John’s example challenges us to include some minimalist aspects in our lives. Where can we declutter so that we can hear God’s voice? Is it material? Is it spiritual? Is it time? John calls us to make space to receive our Lord. Is there clutter that needs to be sent packing? Simplicity is not lack; it is space for God’s presence.
Dear Jesus, we hear the call of your servant John, who asks us to recognise you and make space for you. Show us where to declutter. Fill us with your Spirit. Amen.
