Explore study at ALC

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Australian Lutheran College (ALC) delivers theological education and training that prepares people in and for ministry – pastors, teachers, church workers and volunteers – to serve and lead with confidence, integrity, competence and compassion.

ALC’s learning model enables students to access their classes online from where they live and, where applicable, complete their fieldwork in their home congregation. Where possible, students are also given the opportunity to gather together for a week or two of intensive learning throughout the year.

Explore ALC’s range of tertiary level courses from diploma through to doctorate at alc.edu.au/study or explore a selection of ALC’s courses offered in 2025 below.

Enrolments for 2025 are now open, so inquire today. There are also several scholarships available.

‘Deep dive into what the Lutheran Church teaches’

This training opportunity explores the teachings of the Lutheran Church, including key Lutheran doctrines and Lutheran perspectives, and can be undertaken for credit or audit (auditing a unit within ALC’s higher education programs enables you to participate in the class, but you don’t complete assignments, and you won’t receive any credit towards a qualification).

The four units on offer are:

  • Prolegomena and the Triune God (summer intensive in Adelaide)
  • Sanctification (weekly webinars)
  • Moral Theology (winter intensive in Melbourne)
  • Creation and Redemption (weekly webinars)

Students don’t have to enrol in all four units but in order to earn an award, four units must be successfully completed over time. Students enrolled in an award and studying a unit for credit can apply for a part-fee scholarship through ALC.

Discover

Discover is a full or part-time commitment, designed to assist people to discern what their service in the church might look like through a personal and supported journey of action and reflection.

Participants enrol in a higher education qualification while also engaging in a formational experience within their local context, supported by ALC staff and local ministry supervisors and mentors.

Formal qualifications that align with Discover include the Diploma in Theology or the Diploma in Ministry. Post-graduate courses are also available. More information about qualifications can be accessed through ALC’s study page or email enquiries@alc.edu.au to register to attend one of the upcoming information sessions on 28 November or 11 December.

Midlife Masters

If you are contemplating changing careers and are interested in serving the church in a pastoral ministry role, then ALC’s Midlife Masters program might just be for you. Commencing with an eight-day intensive from 28 January 2025, this accelerated pathway to ordination for mature-age candidates has been developed by ALC with the support of the LCANZ’s College of Bishops.

The program consists of two years of intensive study and fieldwork scheduled over 48 weeks each year, followed by a period of in-service transition. Participants who have previously completed the relevant studies will have their program customised to reduce their study load.

Unit fees do apply, however, financial assistance is available in the form of fee scholarships, grants and congregational sponsorship. A small stipend will also be available to those accepted as candidates for ordination.

Email enquiries@alc.edu.au or visit alc.edu.au/midlife-masters to find out more.

Grants and scholarships

ALC has a number of scholarships and grants to assist new and existing domestic students. Fee scholarships generally take the form of a reimbursement of fees after successful completion of relevant units. Grants are associated with out-of-pocket expenses (excluding unit fees) relating to study.
