The little tent bringing Jesus to the showgrounds

In the heart of South Australia’s Mallee region, a humble tent has become a place of warmth, welcome and witness. Born from the vision of Kingsley and Tracey Woidt of Buccleuch in 2019, the Mallee Lutheran Parish outreach tent is more than just a shelter at local shows – it’s a ministry of presence and hospitality.

The concept was simple: create a space where people could pause, sit down and share a moment of connection. Whether weary from walking the showgrounds or simply seeking a friendly face, visitors are greeted with free tea, coffee, cool drinks and biscuits – small offerings that open the door to deeper conversations and spiritual care.

This grassroots initiative quickly grew into a beloved part of local show experiences, including the Karoonda Farm Fair, the Pinnaroo and Coonalpyn Shows and the Meningie Food Fair, embodying the heart of Christian outreach: meeting people where they are with no strings attached.

The tent is stocked with resources that extend the ministry beyond the moment, including:

  • John Eckermann Comfort Crosses – small wooden crosses that fit perfectly in the palm, offering a tactile reminder of Christ’s presence and peace.
  • Showbags for children – since 2019, more than 1,800 Hope for kids bags (formerly known as Happyland bags) have been distributed thanks to the generous support of Lutheran Media. They are filled with fun items and gentle messages of faith, planting seeds of hope in young children.
  • Christian literature and tracts – available for those seeking encouragement or spiritual guidance.

These gifts are not just giveaways. They’re tools of encouragement, conversation starters and symbols of care.

Volunteers are always present to listen and pray with visitors, offering pastoral care and spiritual guidance. Whether someone is navigating grief, celebrating a new beginning or just curious about faith, the tent can be a respite amid the hustle and bustle of the show.

In a playful twist, the tent is also part of the Yellow Brick Road, a popular show activity that leads families through various stalls. This inclusion ensures that the outreach tent is not just a quiet corner but a vibrant, accessible, visible and inviting part of the show’s journey.

The Mallee Parish outreach tent is a living example of the church beyond its walls. It’s not about programs or preaching – it’s about presence: showing up with a smile, a drink, a prayer and a listening ear. It’s about reminding people that they are seen, valued and loved.

As the tent continues to travel from show to show, it carries with it the spirit of Christ’s hospitality, to share the gospel in practical and heartfelt ways, one cup of tea at a time.

Peter Heintze is a pastor at the Mallee Lutheran Parish in South Australia, which consists of nine congregations.
