IMPLEMENTATION - ORDINATION

Ordination: some questions

I greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

In October 2024, our church gathered for our Regular Convention of General Synod and we discussed the matter of ordination. Our delegates resolved to remove the teaching in our church that prohibits the ordination of women (read more).

Before the convention, I wrote a number of short papers for delegates and for the people of the church about the matters before us at the convention. Since the convention, I suggested to our College of Bishops that it would help some people in our church if I presented those brief papers in the form of videos, so that people didn't have to read but could watch or listen to the material.

In some conversations around the matter of ordination, sometimes people have been too quick to judge their sisters and brothers as unfaithful. Some people have published inaccurate information. Some people have sought to make other Christians afraid. Some people have spoken very poorly of the work of the church and of its faithful leaders.

I commend this material to our gracious God, trusting that this work will help deepen the knowledge and study of the Scriptures and of the Lutheran Confessions amongst us.

Introduction

Q1: In October last year, the Convention of General Synod resolved to remove the prohibition of women to the office of the public ministry in the LCANZ. Can you remind us of the background to this historic decision?

Q2: The resolution on ordination was a significant change in teaching for our LCANZ. Was this the first time our church has changed a teaching on the service and witness of women – or have there been other instances?

Q3: We are a diverse church with diverse views on various matters. Can you explain the various views we hold on ordination?

Q4: Some people say that those who support the ordination of both women and men don’t believe the Bible is the word of God. How do you respond to that?

Q5: The terms ‘confessional Lutheran’ and ‘confessional church’ are being used quite a lot these days. What does the term ‘confessional’ mean, and is the LCANZ a confessional church?

Q6: Will allowing the ordination of women inevitably lead to the conducting of same-sex marriages?

Q7: Isn’t it the historic position that only men may be ordained to the public ministry of the church?

Q8: Isn't the historic position that God created women to be subordinate to men?

Q9: It’s been said that people who support the ordination of women are not faithful to God’s word. How do you respond to that assertion?

Q10: Are there examples from church history where teachings were changed?

Q11: Some people are concerned about the validity of the sacraments if the pastor is a woman. How do you respond to that concern?

How did we do?
