Thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life (1 Timothy 6:19).
Read 1 Timothy 6:11b–19
Taking hold of life that really is life … How do we achieve this?
We live in an affluent society, and it is easy to trust in wealth and possessions – they become our invisible crutch. So, let us become aware of where our true treasure lies. It is the long-term treasures that moth and rust do not destroy; it is the word and promises of God to love us and deliver us as his own for all eternity.
What might we ask God to help us with? To put God first in our days, thoughts and ways. To soak in, meditate and dwell on his word in our everyday lives. Do all the good you can – don’t wait to be asked. Look out for the opportunities, even in the little everyday moments, to do good. Don’t be full of yourself – think of others and their needs. Don’t put your security in wealth; instead, share your resources – no matter what they are. We can’t take it with us, and God has promised to provide all our needs.
In this way, we will take hold of the life that really is life.
Lord God, help us not to put our hope in wealth but to be content and put our hope in you. Use us to do good, to be rich in good deeds and to be generous and willing to share. Amen.
