Leadership in practice: some wisdom from Mark Horstman
Many of our members are deeply committed to strong, values-based leadership — and it’s always encouraging when insights are shared that remind us why this work matters so much.
This week, Justin from Lutheran Services shared with a few colleagues a thought-provoking reflection on leadership, drawing from Mark Horstman’s 8 Laws of Management. It struck a chord, so we thought it was worth sharing more broadly.
At the heart of these principles is a simple yet powerful idea: how we lead our people has a ripple effect. The way we treat our teams influences how they treat one another — and ultimately, how they show up for residents, clients, and families. Leadership starts with people.
Here are Horstman’s 8 Laws of Management — worth reflecting on, whether you’re leading a team of 3 or 300:
- It’s all about people
Having great people is more important than systems or processes. - More communication is better
Relationships and problem-solving thrive in open dialogue. - You’re not that smart; they’re not that dumb
Authenticity matters. Don’t try to fool others. - Control is an illusion
Influence builds stronger, more respectful relationships than control. - The river is wide, the currents are messy…
Progress isn’t always neat or linear — and that’s okay. - There are no secrets
Be appropriately candid — most things come to light eventually. - How you feel is your fault
You have the power to choose how you respond. - The other way often works just fine
Stay open. Your way isn’t always the only or best way.
These reminders are timely, especially as we navigate reform and transformation across aged care, retirement living, and community services. It’s a good moment to ask ourselves: Are we leading in a way that puts people first?
Thanks to Justin for sharing, and to all of you who continue to lead with heart, clarity, and humility.
