His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness (2 Peter 1:3).

Read 2 Peter 1:3–11

I was very fortunate to have a loving and attentive father who was a significant part of my life. He wasn’t perfect, and he was a man of his time, but his very nature was grace and love. Dad always made time for me and often insisted that he was part of my life, even during those teenage years when I thought I didn’t want him. He was consistent.

I had complete emotional security knowing that my dad’s reactions were entirely dependent on what I did rather than what mood he was in. I was free to be myself, and I knew he had my back. I understood my dad’s nature through our relationship, and his strong influence has shaped who I am.

I am different to my father. His interests and mine didn’t really intersect. But everyone who knew us both could say that I shared much of his nature. His even temperament, leadership, sacrifice and love for his family are qualities I desire for my life and work hard to emulate.

So, too, with God. He wants to be in relationship with us, even when we think we don’t need him. He is consistent. He is love. He is sacrifice. He is healing. He is powerful. He is the bringer of peace and purpose.

I recognise that my nature is often opposite to God’s. He loves those who hurt him. He offers the gift of life, and life abundantly, relentlessly. He showed us his values in the life of Jesus. He promises to give us freedom and honesty so that we can grow. And as we spend time with God in word and prayer, we start to share his nature. Praise God for his patience and everlasting love as we seek to reflect his nature.

Heavenly Father, your love is boundless, and your patience is great. Thank you for calling us to you and offering us intimacy so that we share your nature. Give us your love and grace. Give us your healing. Give us your power. Amen.

Pastor Greg lives in beautiful Redland Bay with his wife, Connie, where they enjoy the beaches, weather and outdoor lifestyle of south Brisbane. He serves as the college pastor at Faith Lutheran College, Redlands.
