Ordinary servants

6 October 2019

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

‘Suppose one of you has a servant who is ploughing or looking after the sheep. When he comes in from the paddock, do you tell him to hurry and eat his meal? Of course not! Instead, you say to him, “Get my supper ready, then put on your apron and wait on me while I eat and drink; after that you may have your meal.” The servant does not deserve thanks for obeying orders, does he? It is the same with you; when you have done all you have been told to do, say, “We are ordinary servants; we have only done our duty.”’ (verses 7-10)

Read Luke 17:5-10

It had been a long and exhausting day. I had given everything I was called to give to those the Lord brought my way. I had impressed myself with the care I had shown, the listening skills I had shown, the biblical insight I had given. Tired and yet happy, the old thought came into my head, ‘Boy, you’re special. Actually, you’re more worthy than some others we both know. You should be recognised for today’s acts of faith!’

To such ideas that may often occupy your mind and mine, Jesus says that you and I are ordinary servants who only ever do what he calls us and equips us to do. It is all about him, not us. May you be happy to live in his recognition today and give him all the glory in your faith-filled acts of service for others.

Lord Jesus, I thank you for the freedom to serve you that you have won for me on the cross. To you be all praise, honour and glory forever. Amen.
