Jesus’ Style of Leadership

18 April 2019

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The way that Jesus led often stands in sharp contrast to leadership in this world. So, what was his leadership style?

He came to serve, not to be served as a leader.

  • “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:28

He was obedient to God and the Holy Spirit and depended on them.

  • “The Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.” John 5:19

He constantly pointed people to God.

  • “I have made you (Father) known to them, and will continue to make you known…” John 17:26

He was focused on others and building relationships.

  • “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.” John 13:34

He was a role model to those he led and showed them God’s character.

  • “I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.” John 13:15

He empowered others to lead.

  • “After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go.” Luke 10:1

He was a team builder.

  • “He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach and to have authority to drive out demons.” Mark 3:14-15

He often took time out to pray and be with God.

  • “Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.” Luke 5:16
