About faith

3 April 2019

Then the disciples came to Jesus in private and asked him, ‘Why couldn’t we drive the demon out?’

‘It was because you do not have enough faith,’ answered Jesus. ‘I assure you that if you have faith as big as a mustard seed, you can say to this hill, “Go from here to there!” and it will go. You could no anything’. (verses 19, 20)

Read Matthew 17:14-27

I recently heard about a top cricketer who will not go into bat unless all the toilets in the dressing room have their seats down. There are probably more people in our society who take greater notice of what the astrological charts say than what the Scriptures say. Mention the word ‘science’ and it will generate instant belief in many people.

The common element in all this nonsensical behaviour is faith. People put a great deal of unfounded trust in superstition, mysticism or human knowledge.

In contrast there is faith in God and what he can do. His power knows no limits. If you place your trust and belief in him, there are no boundaries to what is possible. Faith can move the proverbial mountain, as long as the faith is placed, not in some human concoction, but in the Lord of the universe.

We often tend, in our unbelieving and perverse fashion, to turn to useless powers. Meanwhile God is always waiting to do mighty things for us.

Dear Lord, give me the faith that moves mountains, so that I might do great things for you. Amen.

by Richard Hauser, in ‘Renewed Hope for each Day’ (LCA, Openbook, 2000)
