Your everyday God

6 March 2018

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Some Pharisees asked, ‘Why are you doing what our Law says you cannot do on the Sabbath?’
Jesus answered them, ‘Haven’t you read what David did when he and his men were hungry? He went into the house of God, took the bread offered to God, ate it, and gave it to his men too. Yet it is against our Law for anyone except the priests to eat that bread.’

And Jesus concluded, ‘The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.’  (verses 2-5)

Read Luke 6: 1-11

We’ve come a long way since the days of seeing attendance at Sunday worship as paramount. You may have to play sport or work on a Sunday. People understand. Even God understands – in fact, God understands best of all.

As Lord of the Sabbath, Jesus also knows your need, better than you know it yourself, to spend time with God. God sees your heart, your motives, your needs. God gently guides you to where those wonderful gifts of word and sacrament are provided in worship. Here God serves you, and you respond in respect, awe, humility and praise. God desires this close communication with you – so close that Jesus’ bread-body and wine-blood become a part of you. Jesus takes you by the hand and gently leads you into his house to give you the best gifts of your week. There are no strings attached.

Take my hand every day, my everyday God, and, especially on your day, lead me to receive your special gifts in worship. Thank you for those gifts, which you make available to me free of charge. Amen.
