The God who seeks us

24 January 2018

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

‘Listen! I stand at the door and knock; if any hear my voice and open the door, I will come into their house and eat with them, and they will eat with me. To those who win the victory I will give the right to sit beside me on my throne, just as I have been victorious and now sit by my Father on his throne.’ (verses 20, 21)

Read Revelation 3: 14-22

Here is the most loveable picture of Jesus: the God who seeks us, the God who takes the initiative, the God who keeps knocking at our heart’s door. He is the God who is searching for sinful people in order to invite them to have fellowship with him.

Over the centuries people have sometimes become monks in order to find God. But it is really the other way round. It is God who finds them. St Bernard, way back in the twelfth century, used to say to his monks, ‘However early you wake and rise for prayer in the chapel, you will find God always awake before you, waiting for you – indeed, he it was who wakened you to seek his face’.

God comes to you in Jesus because he has so much to offer you. He offers not only a wonderful fellowship meal but also the promise of a final victory, the promise that you can share in the glories of heaven. This involves nothing less than sharing life with God in all its glory, beauty and perfection for all eternity. This is what the God who seeks you in Jesus offers you.

Christ knocks, Christ pleads, Christ offers. But it is all to no avail if you will not open the door of your heart and allow him to enter.

Thank you, Jesus, for your patience in graciously coming to me. I want you in my heart and life. Help me to receive you into my heart and to have fellowship with you, now and always. Amen.
