Media a gift from God
Media often gets a bad rap. There is so much bad news broadcast and published that it makes us wonder if media can ever be used for good.
Just like Martin Luther, we at Lutheran Media believe it can be – and that it is a great gift from God. We have been using media to share the gospel for more than 70 years.
What great opportunities we have been given through the media to SHARE THE HOPE that we have in Christ Jesus
The printing press was invented in Luther’s time and it enabled the spread of his writings throughout Europe and the world. In our era, we have been given many other forms of media that connect with more people than ever before.
Today we have the internet (including social media), television, radio, newspapers, magazines, and DVDs, and many ways to access them, including tablets and smart phones. Social media website Facebook has more than 2 billion active subscribers. What great opportunities we have been given through the media to share the love and joy we know in Christ Jesus.
Lutheran Media has been communicating Christ’s message of hope to the people of Australia since 2 September 1945. On that day Dr Walter Maier was heard on 36 radio stations on the Lutheran Hour, in all Australian capital cities, and 106 people responded.
Many people have heard and believed in Jesus as a result of Lutheran Media’s outreach, which now includes the people of New Zealand. These people include Damian from Queensland, who contacted us saying: ‘Gidday! A lot of bad stuff happenin’ in my life at the moment. Can I please have the anxiety book I heard about when I was listening to the radio today? Thanks.’
You may have stories about how you have been helped through media or how you have helped someone using media – maybe through an encouraging Facebook post or by writing a letter. We’d love to hear your stories.
Thanks be to God for people like you who have enabled the spread of his good news through media. I pray that Jesus’ message of hope can be shared with millions of people for many years to come.
‘My word will not return to me empty’ (Isaiah 55:11).

On 18 September Lutheran Media will host a high tea in Adelaide to celebrate the mission work of the past 70 years and to hear how media may be used in the future to help people in your communities. See the Lutheran Media advert on the inside of the back cover of this issue for more information.
