Being a grandparent: support from Lutheran Tract Mission
by Anne Hansen
‘So even to old age and grey hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your might to all the generations to come’ Psalm 71:18a (NRSV)
As a grandparent, do you realise you are second only to the parents in your potential to impact your grandchildren spiritually? Grandparents are helping parents with their children more than ever in our society. To be able to help parents with babysitting, loving grandchildren and even spoiling them is so appreciated by parents. To have people look after the children who love them just as much as they do is what draws parents to ask more of the grandparents – and what a joy and responsibility!
In Deuteronomy 4, the Israelites are told to ‘…keep the commandments of the LORD your God’ (vs 2). Then in verse 9 it says, ‘Teach them to your children and your grandchildren’ (NKJV). Seeing this little word ‘and’, we are reminded that grandparents are also responsible for teaching two generations, not just one. Grandparents are ‘spiritual influencers’ not just secondary caregivers. There are other passages in the Bible commanding to pass on his word from ‘generation to generation’. Grandparents have a very important role!
Lutheran Tract Mission has many resources to help you in sharing God’s word. As grandparents and parents, we are given the duty of caring physically and spiritually to our children. Look on the LTM website www.ltm.org.au and find a tract that you can give to the children in your life to help them grow. As a grandparent, you are blessing to your grandchildren!
Have a look at the LTM website www.ltm.org.au and search ‘Grandparents’.
