Being a Christ-follower

The fruit of the Spirit, as written in Galatians 5:22,23, are gifts from the Holy Spirit that produce goodness in our lives, and when we do them, we share Christ with others. But some qualities cannot be achieved on our own. In the chaos that is life, we are given the Holy Spirit as the sap that flows through us and connects us to the tree of Jesus Christ, which allows us to produce the fruits of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. It is through being connected with Jesus that we can learn the Christ-like responses.

The first three (love, joy and peace) show the relationship we have with God.

The next three (patience, kindness and goodness) are our relationships with others and imitate how God shows love to us.

The last three (faithfulness, gentleness and self-control) are the actions of our inner self that we convey to others.

Being a Christ-follower involves being rooted in God’s love and in his word to imitate what Jesus would do. Jesus is our great example, and we can only do this through the help of the Holy Spirit.

Lutheran Tract Mission (LTM) has resources to help you grow as a Christ-follower and share Christ with others. Explore the LTM website at www.ltm.org.au and search for ‘Christian growth’ to find these resources.

Anne Hansen is Lutheran Tract Mission’s Tract Development Officer.
