… Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else? (Matthew 11:3)
Read Matthew 11:2–11
Have you seen people standing at the airport holding a card, or these days a phone, with a name on it as they wait to meet someone they don’t know? Mind you, I do recall a time when my beloved daughters were hanging about in the departure lounge at the old Adelaide Airport, waiting for the arrival of their cousin and wondering why that cousin hadn’t appeared!
John asks for reassurance that Jesus is ‘The One’. John is tucked away in prison but kept informed about what Jesus is up to – and seeks reassurance that Jesus is the one for whom they have been waiting.
In the time of John and Jesus, word was spread from person to person – there was no media of any kind, no newspapers, no radio, no TV and no phones. There were no news bulletins and no fake news.
The good news of Jesus and what he was doing was spread effectively by word of mouth, person to person. Mary shared the news of Jesus’ resurrection as she ran from the empty grave. And the news spread!
So how about it? What are you doing to spread the good news of Jesus, to tell others about how he came to Earth and was fully human? How are you telling others he died on the cross and rose from the dead to save you and to save me?
It may seem corny, but let’s ‘put Christ back into Christmas’. Maybe your Christmas greetings can be a simple message such as ‘Wishing you a blessed Christmas as we celebrate Jesus’ birth once again’, ‘May God’s love be with you and sustain you this Christmas and in the year to come’, or ‘My prayer for you this Christmas is that the light of Jesus’ love will guide you and guard you in the year to come’.
We know that relationships between individuals play a crucial part in spreading news and opinions. So, let’s work together to sow some seeds of Jesus’ love in the lives of our friends and family.
Dear Jesus, thank you for being The One who cares for each and every one of us. Thank you for becoming human and for the amazing life you lived here on Earth. Thank you for the freedom to celebrate your birth every year. Help us make our celebrations worthy of you. Amen.
