A special visit to Immanuel Gawler Primary School
Lutheran Disability Services (LDS) recently had the privilege of visiting Immanuel Gawler Primary School SA, and the story behind the visit is one that speaks to the very best of community and human connection.
The children at Immanuel Gawler had chosen LDS as the focus of their Term 1 fundraising efforts, with a purpose that was both simple and deeply meaningful: to help bring joy and connection to the people we support. Their efforts would contribute to providing Christmas and birthday gifts as well as enabling clients to come together and enjoy shared activities and excursions. When the students learned that some individuals may otherwise miss out on these experiences, they were eager to act. They fundraised with enthusiasm, transforming their compassion into meaningful support for others in their community.
For the children, it was a profound learning experience, one that opened their eyes to the lives of people in their wider community and showed them that a small act of kindness can carry enormous weight. For our clients, it was a reminder that they are seen, valued, and celebrated.
LDS clients Alex and Rory, together with staff members Ashley and Emma, were warmly welcomed by students and staff at the school. Highlights included a tour of classrooms, time in the library, and attending a Year 3 assembly where the donation was gratefully received.
This visit is also a beautiful example of what becomes possible when Lutheran organisations across the church connect with one another. Immanuel Gawler Primary School and Lutheran Disability Services sit within the same broader Lutheran community, yet without this connection they may never have found each other. When our schools, disability services, aged care organisations, and community services work together and build relationships across their boundaries, they create opportunities that none of them could generate alone. The children were enriched. Our clients were honoured. And the church was stronger for it.
We are sincerely thankful to the entire Immanuel Gawler school community, its students, staff, and families, for their kindness, their creativity, and their generous hearts. It was a blessing to share time with the children and to witness firsthand the compassion they showed for others.
