Save me!

11 November 2017

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

May all who come to you
be glad and joyful.
May all who are thankful for your salvation
always say, ‘How great is God!’
I am weak and poor;
come to me quickly, O God.
You are my saviour and my Lord –
hurry to my aid!
(verses 4,5)

Read Psalm 70

The psalm writer knows God. He knows God, first and foremost as a God who saves. He has experienced God’s saving help before, so now, when be is again threatened by those who are trying to take his life, he cries out once again to God, ‘Save me!’

There are those who are trying to take our life as well. They are trying to take us away from God, trying to make us take our eyes off Jesus. Satan, our sinful nature and the selfishness of the world continue to tempt us with empty promises. They try to lead us out of the light and back into the darkness.

By ourselves we can’t do anything. But we are not by ourselves. Jesus is always present with us. The Holy Spirit, whom Jesus sent, dwells with us. God is truly ‘Immanuel’, God with us. And he will save us, as he has done time and time again in the past.

When you fall into temptation, when Satan prowls around and when death stalks you, cry out to Jesus. And before you have even begun to open your mouth, he will be there. He’ll be there to save you.

Lord Jesus, save me. Amen.
