Good enough

2 May 2017

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

Jesus, then, is the High Priest that meets our needs. He is holy; he has no fault or sin in him; he has been set apart from sinners and raised above the heavens. He is not like other high priests; he does not need to offer sacrifices every day for his own sins first and then for the sins of the people. He offered one sacrifice, once and for all, when he offered himself. (verses 26,27)

Read Hebrews 7:18-28

Almost every day the question comes up, ‘Am I good enough?’ It’s almost as if you see your life as a Christian as some sort of contest where you have to reach the standard that qualifies you for the many benefits and blessings that God gives. Behind this thinking is the idea that in some way what Jesus did was not enough and you have to do your part too.

Not true. Jesus has done all that is required ‘once and for all’. His work doesn’t have to be imitated. It doesn’t need to be repeated. It doesn’t have to be earned. What Jesus did is done. He lived and died that you might have life. Now take hold of this truth in faith and live this truth.

Jesus, you have done all that is needed to pay for my sins and give me eternal life. Thank you. Help me to live in this truth. Amen.

by Pastor Tom Peitsch, in ‘Living Water for each Day’ (LCA, Openbook, 2001)
