Give up the useless things

… serve the Lord with all your heart, and do not turn aside after useless things that cannot profit or save … (1 Samuel 12:20b,21).

Read 1 Samuel 12:1–6,16–25

You would think the Israelites would have been better at this ‘relationship with God’ thing by now. He had brought them out of Egypt, sustaining them through many years of wandering in the wilderness, into the Promised Land. He had been faithful and kept them safe all that time. And yet here they were still rebelling against him and turning towards ‘useless things’ (idols) (verse 21) to give them a sense of security and meaning. In addition to this, they had now chosen a human king over God.

How often is that the case for us, too? Baptised into God’s family, brought up in the faith, nourished with word and sacraments, and showered with his love and blessings. And yet, we still find it difficult to trust God fully, give ourselves over to him and serve him and others as we should. We seek security and meaning in other places – our families, our jobs, our wealth or our achievements. We look to other ‘kings’ for rescue.

And how does our loving God respond? By offering mercy, calling us to repent, forgiving us and drawing us to him again. He doesn’t abandon us. Instead, he makes us his children: ‘a people for himself’ (verse 22). Rather than turning his back on us, he comes to us – to rescue us from ourselves and our sinful nature. Not just once, but every day, as we live the rhythm of new life in Christ: turning our back on sin, being assured of his forgiveness and clinging to him in faith. And, by the power of the Holy Spirit, he lovingly and patiently teaches us to serve him with our whole hearts.

Merciful God, we praise you for your patience, faithfulness and loving kindness towards us. When we chase after useless things, please draw us back to you. When we lack trust, please strengthen our faith. Please help us to keep our eyes focused on you and teach us to serve you with our whole hearts. Amen.
