Comfort in being watched

The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their cry; The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:15,18).

Read Psalm 34:15–20

With a son away in the navy and two other adult children – one left home and working, and the other working away and then travelling – our eyes as parents can’t be overseeing everything they are doing now that they’re older and doing their own thing. Sometimes they’d say, ‘Thank goodness for that’! Tomorrow is our daughter’s birthday and, if all goes to plan, we’ll be several thousand kilometres apart.

But there was a time when they were younger and more vulnerable that our parental attention constantly monitored where they were and what they were doing and noticed all the cycles of their day. Almost nothing escaped our attention. Technology has helped to some degree now that we can Facetime and receive the constant stream of social media posts (when they remember).

Thankfully, our Heavenly Father’s gaze is always upon his children. ‘The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their cry’ (Psalm 34:15). This should give each of us the reassurance that we are never alone and that Jesus’ words at the close of Matthew’s Gospel are our daily reality: ‘Surely I am with you always to the end of the age’ (Matthew 28:20).

God’s love for you, his child, is so great that his watchful eye, attentive ear and protective angels ensure that there is nothing you will experience he doesn’t know about. While we shouldn’t seek out experiences that put us in danger, what a comfort to know that ‘many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord rescues them from them all’ (Psalm 34:19). This includes you.

How many times have you found yourself in a difficult situation? How did it work out in the end? Thank God for his intervention.

Ever-present Lord, thank you for your constant care of us as your children. Reassure us that we are never alone and that you only desire what is best for us. Please help us to see your protective hand over our lives in all situations, guarding our body, mind and soul. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Pastor Steve Liersch and his wife are almost empty nesters as their three adult children explore the world with work. They live in the southern coastal suburbs of Perth near Rockingham. Steve enjoys gardening, watching sports – especially Port Power and cricket – playing sudoku and catching up with friends. Sharing God’s love with others is still ranked as his top thing to do.
