Keep praying and carry on

31 March 2020

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

This fresh set of Daily Devotions is being provided for our LCA/NZ family, friends and visitors to help us to keep our eyes on Jesus as we face unsettling times. They can be used by families and individuals as part of the LCA/NZ’s Church@Home resources to encourage us and build trust in our Heavenly Father during this season of uncertainty and isolation.

Then Jesus taught the followers that they should always pray and never lose hope (Luke 18:1).

Read Luke 18:1-8

As someone who has watched and re-watched, read and re-read the Lord of the Rings trilogy more times than I can recall, when I recall Scripture it’s not unusual for me to find a parallel in Tolkien’s work. When I read this Scripture, I’m taken back to Gandalf’s words, ‘Save me from the stubbornness of dwarves. Their pride will be their downfall’.

Being humbled isn’t a pleasant experience, especially when it comes at a cost to our pride. But during these testing times, God is calling us to humble ourselves, surrender ourselves and rely on his strength and power instead of anything or anybody else – especially ourselves. This pandemic is bigger than anything many of us have ever faced, and regardless of the intelligence and expertise of human beings, our only hope lies in the love that Abba (Father) has for us.

To hear or state the words ‘all we can do is pray’ is such an understatement! The all is everything! The most powerful weapon we humans have in this time is prayer. We may not possess the scientific acumen and skill to create a vaccine or organise medical or quarantine procedures, but all children of the King can contribute in this battle by allowing the Holy Spirit to do his work in us and in the world.

We pray, we move on. We pray, we keep going. We pray, and we carry on.

Abba, Father, Lord of all creation, we are your children and you are our God. You are our hope, our strength and our rock during this time, and you have given us authority through your Son to cry boldly for healing and renewal in your people and your creation. Amen.
