Why does God care for us?

31 December 2019

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

When I look at the sky, which you have made, at the moon and the stars, which you set in their places—what are human beings, that you think of them; mere mortals, that you care for them? Yet you made them inferior only to yourself; you crowned them with glory and honour. (verses 3-5)

Read Psalm 8

I loved the times I went camping with my family when I was younger. I remember looking up at the starry sky at night, filled with wonder, because the night sky looks so much larger and brighter away from the lights of the city. The stars hold much wonder and mystery for so many people. And yet God seemed to make them as an afterthought (see Genesis 1:16).

Despite the grandeur and wonder of the universe, God cares for us, even though he made us from the dust of the ground. He cares so much for his walking, talking blobs of mud that he made us in his image, to be in relationship with him. Not only that; when we rebelled against him, he cared about us enough to visit us in the form of a human—his Son, Jesus.

When I ponder how selfish and recalcitrant we humans are, I am filled with wonder that God still cares for us at all. Then again, his care for us is not based on what we are or do but on his immeasurable love and mercy.

Lord God Almighty, maker of the heavens and the earth, thank you for caring for me. Amen.
